Why Species Selection Matters More Than Most People Realize
Central Texas is not an easy environment for trees. The heat is intense, the summers are long and dry, and the soil can be shallow, rocky, or clay-heavy depending on where you are. A tree that thrives in another part of the country may struggle here without the right conditions and care.
Choosing the wrong species for your location creates problems that compound over time: root systems that conflict with your foundation or utility lines, canopies that outgrow their space, or trees that can't handle the stress of a Texas drought year.
Jeff's background as an ISA-Certified Arborist means he approaches species selection with the long view in mind, not just what looks good at planting, but what will serve your property well over the next 20, 30, or 50 years.
What our ISA Certified Arborist Jeff considers before recommending tree species:
Your soil type and drainage
Overhead and underground utility lines
Proximity to structures, foundations, and fencing
Desired canopy size and shade coverage
Drought tolerance and long-term water needs
Native and adapted species suited to Central Texas conditions
Planting in Central Texas — What You Should Know
Central Texas communities sit in a climate that rewards drought-tolerant, heat-adapted species. Live Oaks, Cedar Elms, Mexican Sycamores, and Bald Cypress are among the trees that perform well here, but even within strong species choices, placement, and planting technique determine whether a tree thrives or survives.
Spring and fall are generally the best planting windows in Central Texas. Fall planting in particular gives root systems time to establish before summer heat arrives. Jeff will advise on timing as part of the process.
If you're replacing a tree that was removed, adding shade to a specific area, or considering a larger landscape project, this is also a good time to consult an arborist. Jeff can assess your entire property, factor in existing trees, and help you think through a longer-term plan, not just the single planting in front of you.
